East Petersburg, PA. Wayne Barton, who is well-known among woodcarvers for intricate designs, was honored as Woodcarver of the Year by the editors of Wood Carving Illustrated magazine. At an awards ceremony hosted by the Dayton Carver’s Guild, Artistry in Wood Show, November 11-13, 2005, Wayne was recognized for his contribution to chip carving, the process in which the carver “chips” away precise, regular pieces of wood, leaving a design cut into a flat wood surface.
In presenting Wayne Barton with the Woodcarver of the Year Award, Woodcarving Illustrated editor, Bob Duncan, credited Barton for the resurgence of chip carving in the U.S. Wayne was honored for his ground-breaking work in positive imaging, inspired by his study of Gothic architecture, which has the appearance of relief carving using chip carving techniques.
Wayne was formally trained in Brienz, the woodcarving center of Switzerland where chip carving emerged as the folk art that decorated every wooden tool, utensil or piece of furniture around the house and barn. He is the founder of The Alpine School of Woodcarving, Ltd, the oldest establishment in North America specializing in chip carving. His work has been recognized and honored in a special exhibition at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich, Switzerland. He is the author of five best-selling books on chip carving, a guest on The American Woodshop and The Woodwright Shop shows and a regular contributor to Chip Chats, the magazine of the National Woodcarving Association.
Wayne invites others to try chip carving. “With more leisure time on their hands than ever before, those who are inclined to carve are happily discovering chip carving in numbers that give rise to a renaissance. Chip carving is the fastest, easiest and simplest way there is to carve. The tools are few and the technique is quite basic.” Barton teaches how to chip carve in two-day and week-long seminars at various locations in the U.S., Canada and Switzerland. Wayne also is the host of an annual tour to Switzerland. (See www.chipcarving.com for a class and tour schedule). He lives in Park Ridge, Illinois.
