East Petersburg, PA. He doesn’t call himself a “chainsaw carver”, but Steve Blanchard from Salinas, California is among the artists profiled in a new book Art of Chainsaw Carving, An Insider’s Look at 18 Artists Working Against the Grain, by Jessie Groeschen. The book will be available for sale in October from all major bookstore chains, from online booksellers and in specialty retail stores.
Art of Chainsaw Carving tells the story of the development and evolution of chainsaw carving, celebrates the early artists and profiles contemporary artists like Steve Blanchard. The book includes a directory of major national and international chainsaw carving events – chainsaw carving competitions draw hundreds of artists and thousands of spectators.
Steve has long since dropped out of chainsaw competitions. He says he “does his own thing,” which means following his imagination – using the gnarled and twisted tree roots from forest clearings purchased by the truckload! These roots and stumps have become Itsyville, a whimsical village of seven delightful tree houses mingled with magical characters and mythical wood spirits. Itsyville, located 15 miles east of Monterey, is open for visitors – however, those over 12 must show proof of imagination prior to access! See more www.blanchardwoodsculpture.com/itsyville.
Art of Chainsaw Carving is available at local bookstores and online booksellers for $19.95. Fox Chapel is a leading publisher of woodcarving, wood turning and scroll saw books and magazines.
