2010 Best Carving Design Contest: Chip Carving Division Winners

People’s Choice: Chip Carved Guitar

By William Mackay, Waukesha, Wis.

William Mackay’s son wanted to build his own electric guitar and he asked William to decorate it for him.

Chip Carved Guitar
William carved the design into the basswood guitar kit. One mistake could have ruined the entire kit.

“I have been chip carving for 62 years,” William explained. “I took my first chip carving class in Minneapolis, Minn., when I was fourteen years old.”

William stained the guitar body with antique oak gel stain and applied fifteen coats of clear spray lacquer.

Editor’s Choice: The Ravens of Odin

By David Stewart, Brooklyn, N.Y.

David Stewart found inspiration for this carving from Odin, the King of the Gods in Norse mythology.

The Ravens of Odin

“Odin had two ravens,” David explained. “Higin (thought) and
Munin (remembrance). One raven thought to call out and the other remembered to answer.”

David applied linseed oil to the finished carving, wiped off the excess, and let the carving dry for two weeks. Then he brushed on six coats of shellac and buffed it with a shoe brush.
