Henry Neiblum of Audubon, Pa., earned the People’s Choice award with his All Mine!

Henry Neiblum created a fun carving that blurs the line between a caricature and a stylized piece. The smooth flowing lines of All Mine! imply movement and convey emotion—a classic technique in stylized carvings. This movement and emotion set the stage for the funny scene.

“He’s an ordinary mouse feeling so good, standing on a piece of cheese, singing out loud, ‘And it’s all mine!’” Henry said.

Henry carved the mouse from boxwood and finished it with teak oil and a clear finish. The piece stands about 12″ tall.

Editor’s Choice

Daryl Korpela of Oconomowoc, Wis., won the Editor's Choice Award with his Cropped.

Daryl Korpela of Oconomowoc, Wis., won the Editor’s Choice Award with his Cropped.

The editors loved the overall composition of Daryl Korpela’s stylized piece Cropped. Not only was the piece well executed, smooth, and flowing, but it captured a strong sense of movement. The editors felt that the carving, both inside and outside the frame, was a snapshot of an active scene. It is an interesting juxtaposition to be able to see outside the box, but still know you are only seeing a portion of the entire scene.

Daryl carved the mermaid from butternut and made the dolphin and frame from basswood. Daryl used hand and power tools to carve the piece, which he finished with clear water-based finish.
