Three species are referred to as the puffin; two live in the northern Pacific Ocean and one lives in the northern Atlantic Ocean.

Puffins have predominately black and white plumage, a stocky build, and large beaks. They shed the colorful outer parts of their bills after breeding season. They fly low over the ocean’s surface by beating their wings rapidly (up to 400 times per minute), and swim underwater using a technique similar to flying.

Puffins are usually 12 1/2″ to 15″ (318mm to 381mm) long with a 21″ to 25″ (533mm to 635mm) wingspan. They eat mainly fish and other underwater animals.
