In Woodcarving Illustrated Summer 2011 (Issue 55), Robert Triplett demonstrated how to carve a chickadee from a piece of scrap.
Robert carves all sorts of folk-art birds using similar techniques.
I make all of my small birds from scrap wood leftover from larger bird carvings. As long as the piece is large enough for a songbird, I won’t throw it away.
I usually carve my birds from linden (basswood) or pine. I sometimes use a power carver, but I often carve the entire bird with hand tools. For me, it’s more about relaxing and enjoying the process than following a certain procedure.
